Our Story

L ahari is a mild mentally retarded child. Her IQ is 68. Her parents were not aware of her disability through any source. When she was 6½ years old, she had seizures, and her parents took her to NIMHANS, Bangalore for treatment.

The doctors diagnosed her as a mild mentally retarded child. They further informed her parents that since she was almost seven years old, she could learn only one skill, toileting. The chances of learning other skills essential for leading an independent life were very limited. Speech therapy was considered the only option to try, and even that was expected to be difficult at that age.

But her parents were not discouraged. They refused to lose hope. Instead of accepting the limitations, they decided to search for every possible opportunity that could improve Lahari's future.

A Mother's Determination

Without wasting even a single day, her mother underwent the "Parent + Teacher" training programme in Hyderabad.

During the training they realized that many parents were blessed with children having similar developmental difficulties, yet they lacked awareness about the condition, available therapies and rehabilitation services.

Many children could neither attend regular schools nor receive proper education in special schools because their parents were unaware of the importance of early intervention.

Early Intervention Changes Lives

Lahari's parents later realized that if they had known about the importance of therapies before she reached three years of age, they would never have lost that precious time. They would have provided every therapy necessary to help her reach the borderline stage of development.

Though they could not completely erase their anguish, they understood that the severity of disability could be considerably reduced through proper rehabilitation, early intervention, and continuous therapy.

For this, the services of qualified therapists were essential. Encouraged by the support of a noble personality, they came forward with the vision of establishing Lahari Rehabilitation Centre, where children could receive all the therapies they needed under one roof.

Learning swimming and has won 5 Gold Medals and 1 Silver Medal in art competitions for special children.
